June 8 - World Ocean Day

World Ocean Day, organized by the United Nations, is celebrated as a reminder that the oceans play a vital role in our ecosystem. The day aims to mobilize and unite people around the world to manage the oceans more sustainably, while paying tribute to their beauty and richness.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the planet and produces more than 50% of its oxygen. It is also an alarming fact with 90% of large fish populations already depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed.

The celebration of June 8, 2021 corresponds to the second edition of the World Ocean Day. This edition, entirely virtual, will highlight the theme of "The Ocean: Life and Livelihood".

Behind this festive event, there is also the enormous work of the second World Ocean Assessment (WOA II), a 1,200-page report, the result of the work of hundreds of scientists from all over the world, which follows the first report published in 2015. Its objective: to draw up an inventory of the oceans. They represent nearly 97% of the planet's habitable space but are poorly known to us. It was urgent to take an interest in them to assess their state of health.
